Dunbar is a charming harbour side town in the rural county of East Lothian, approximately 30 miles east of Edinburgh and 30 miles from the English border town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. The town of Dunbar boasts the accolade of one of the sunniest towns in Scotland, with visitors flocking to the beaches in summer to enjoy the picturesque coastline and the attractive countryside surroundings.

Dunbar’s historic High Street is packed full of independent retail shops and award-winning food and drink establishments, specialising in fresh seafood and local farm produce. Attractions within the town include the Birthplace of John Muir museum, the medieval fortress that looks over the town, and the quaint harbour that is still an active fishing port, serving fresh seafood to local shops and restaurants.

The local landscape lends itself to numerous outdoor pursuits, with some of the county’s most scenic walks starting and finishing in the town. The John Muir way, a challenging 134 mile walking route across central Scotland starts/finishes in Dunbar, and follows the footsteps of one of the town’s most famous sons, John Muir, an explorer, naturalist and conservationist, who was born in Dunbar. The route passes through John Muir Country Park, a nature reserve just couple of miles west of the town with endless trails through woodlands and beaches, with playgrounds and facilities for families.

The town is also well-known for it’s sports facilities, with several local clubs across a variety of sports. Positioned at the end of Scotland’s golf coast, Dunbar has two excellent links golf courses with stunning sea views and welcoming clubhouses. The local surf school at Belhaven Bay offers a haven for experienced and new surfers, with board hire and lessons available. For those looking for fast- paced thrills, Fox Lake is Scotland’s first wakeboard park, with plenty of amenities to make for a memorable day out, just 5 minutes from Dunbar. Local running, walking and cycling clubs offer further options for socialising, as well as excellent rugby and football facilities at Hall Hill with regular matches for spectators.

Other family fun attractions in Dunbar include East Links Family Park and Dunbar Leisure Pool. East Links Family Park is a farm-based activity park suitable for all ages. A train safari runs through paddocks of friendly farm animals and there are lots of activities including go karts, trampolines, soft play area and a tree-level multi activity fortress. The leisure centre by the harbour comes equipped with a wave machine, beach area, flume and other exciting water features. It also has a health suite with sauna, solarium and steam room, and a fully equipped gym.

Dunbar is very well connected thanks to regular train and bus services, as well as the A1(M) motorway that runs past the town, connecting London to Edinburgh. Edinburgh is approximately 30 minutes from Dunbar by train and car, and Dunbar train station offers daily direct trains to London Kings Cross taking just over four hours. The town has a primary and secondary school for local pupils, as well as local nursery options too. There are several options for supermarkets, with a large Asda Superstore on the outskirts of town beside the popular Dunbar Garden Centre.
