This unique site allowed us to design a high-end, city centre residential development in one of Glasgow’s most prestigious locations. The topography of the site allowed us to introduce a sunken carpark which in turn frees up space to provide garden and amenity space for residents on a concrete deck structure above. In response to the surrounding context we are proposing a traditional urban model, which reinforces the existing street pattern. The outer edges of the new buildings continue the historic street facade and complete the tenement block typology in that area.

The building is divided into two wings which form an ‘L’ shape plan. The wings are simple architectural forms that frame urban spaces. The North wing responds to the scale of the existing adjacent tenement building, while the East wing has the task of defining a new edge to Partick Hill Road, replacing the redundant school buildings which sit awkwardly on the site. The base of the building along Hyndland Avenue is punctuated by one large embrasure which give access to below-ground parking and the communal garden space beyond while the brick apertures across the facades of the building provide private terrace spaces for each apartment.
